The alleyway market located in Haebangchon Ogeori, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, was opened in 1969. With butcher shops, side dish stores, clothes alteration shops, etc. making up the more than 40 small scale stores, the area is gathering young peoples’ attention with unique shops including a restaurant with only one table, a café with rooftop access, workshops, pubs, bookstores run by celebrities, and more. Haebangchon Sinheung Market flourished during 1970s and 1980s due to the active knit industry, but after that was just barely holding on due to the decline of area industries and facility deterioration. Now, the city of Seoul has plans to open a new ‘Haebang Art Market,’ featuring cultural and artistic life, in December, 2018 through the Sinheung Market environment improvement plan.
