Goguryeo History Museum to be Built in Mt. Acha by 2011

Recently, the Gwangjin District Office of Seoul announced that
it would build the Mt. Acha Goguryeo History Museum at a site in
Mt. Acha. The work will commence in 2009 and be completed by 2011. The two-story building will be built on a land lot sized 37,444 ㎡ and house exhibition halls, an underground storage room, a souvenir store and a data room. |

Relics excavated in the area, such as earthen and iron ware,
will be displayed. Hands-on learning programs will also be run. Hongryeon Peak Fortress near the museum site will be restored. The tomb for General Ondal will be represented here, although the real one is said to exist in North Korea. Mt. Acha keeps the remains of Mt. Acha Castle (Historic Site No. 234) and fortresses of the Goguryeo Army (Historic Site No. 455). During the Three Kingdom Period (between the 1st Century BC 1 and the 7th Century AD), the place was the intersection of the three countries’ borderlines and thus had strategic importance. The fortresses found there were built by the Goguryeo Army in connection with its attempt for expansion of the territory southward. Many pieces of lotus-patterned roof tiles and earthen/iron ware dating back to the Goguryeo period have been excavated. Nice opportunity for hands-on experience of Goguryeo culture Out of a total of 4,655 pieces of remains excavated, 3,390 pieces were found in the Gwangjin District area, as nine of the 17 fortresses in Mt. Acha are located in the district. The Gwangjin District Office purchased the site on which remains of Goguryeo have been found from the private land owner at a cost of 6.7 billion won between 1987 and 2002 in an effort to preserve them. The district office plans to from a tourism belt linking the museum to be built in Mt. Acha, with the prehistoric site in Gangdong-gu, the Hanseong Baekje historic site in Songpa-gu, and the Silla historic site in Hanam.
