Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the country’s first baseball dome in Gocheok-dong, Guro-gu, on April 16.
In his welcoming speech, Mayor Oh predicted that the completion of sports facilities, including the baseball dome, and cultural facilities in the southwestern part of Seoul will contribute to the revival of culture and business in the area.
Mayor Oh also pledged to support the game of baseball and baseball players in Seoul. He said that he will propose the building of a dome with more than 30,000 seats that will make it possible for the city to host international events such as the World Baseball Classic
The baseball dome in Gocheok-dong is being built on a 57,261 square meter lot. The total cost of the project, initially estimated at 52.9 billion won, will now cost an additional 30 million won to 40 million won. The dome is expected to be completed by September 2011.
