On May 12 (Tues.), the Seoul Metropolitan Government held a launching ceremony to announce the beginning of the “demonstration of autonomous driving mobility” together with Mapo-gu Office, Seoul Institute of Technology (SIT), and private participants including 9 companies and universities.
Major figures, including the Director of the City Transportation Office of the SMG, Head of Mapo-gu Office, and President of SIT, as well as the CEOs and directors from 9 organizations, including 7 famous companies such as LG U+, Unmanned Solution, and Controlworks, as well as Yonsei University and Hanyang University graced the launching ceremony with their presence.
The companies and universities that participated in the demonstration of autonomous driving mobility were selected through the “Testbed Seoul” project that supports the industrialization of products and services of innovative companies.
Seoul established Sangam Autonomous Driving Testbed together with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in June 2019, developing the technology of autonomous driving in the city and running a pilot operation of self-driving cars together with 25 industry-university associations in September of the same year.
However, the “autonomous mobility” that Seoul will present to the public following the launching ceremony is not a temporary pilot operation of vehicles with the function of autonomous driving. It is the future of the mobility service that will be used by citizens on real city roads and bring about innovative changes in life.

To test the mobility services, the SMG, together with private organizations, will be introducing 10 vehicles (3 buses, 4 cars, and 3 delivery robots) in the Sangam area, giving a demonstration on real, uncontrolled, and crowded city roads.
For better safety in the demonstration, the automotive wireless communication network provides autonomous vehicles with information about traffic lights every 0.1 seconds and the remaining time for the next light change to prevent accidents in case of arising of errors in their vision sensors for traffic lights.
Additionally, the thoroughly built infrastructure for C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems) including deep-learning video detection will provide a demonstration environment of top global standards by delivering various risk factors, such as jaywalkers in blind spots and traffic accidents.
Starting on June 16 (Tues.), citizens will be able to experience “autonomous mobility” on the autonomous shuttle bus that circulates the Sangam area.
Applications to ride the shuttle bus will be accepted starting on June 8 (Mon.) on the website of Transport Operation & Information Service (http://topis.seoul.go.kr). The operation of autonomous vehicles that transport citizens will be demonstrated starting on June 16 (Tues.). Any citizen is eligible to apply, free of charge.
The SMG announced that, with the launching ceremony as the momentum, the city has the ambition to lead the global market by becoming the world’s first city to commercialize autonomous driving mobility as well as succeed in early establishment of “non-contact mobility” that minimizes contact between individuals in the preparation for the post-coronavirus age. To this end, the city has plans to make this demonstration an opportunity to spur innovation for a new normal transportation of the future based on autonomous driving where one can call and use every means of transportation without drivers through mobile devices, minimizing contact between individuals and accelerating support for industrialization.
