The exhibition titled Lanterns Carrying Hanseong Baekje’s Dreams is being held from December 20, 2013 to February 2, 2014. At night, the lanterns, which were also used in the Seoul Lantern Festival 2013, will light up the neighborhood of Seokchon East Lake.
This year’s event is intended to inspire the local residents of Songpa-gu with a sense of pride as inhabitants of the former capital of Baekje, where a splendid culture blossomed for 493 years.
The exhibition started with a lighting ceremony at 5:00 p.m. on December 20, and continued with performances by Indie bands and renditions of classic Christmas carols.
A total of 85 lanterns organized under nine themes are lighting up the lake and its surroundings at night: The Beginnings of Hanseong Baekje (Biryu, along with his mother Soseono and younger brother Onjo, founded Songpa as the capital of the newly established kingdom); Scholar Wang In, who disseminated Baekje’s culture and civilization to Japan; the Seven-Pronged Sword, which displayed Baekje’s advanced culture in Japan; Baekje’s System of Government and Attire, etc.
The event will be a unique experience for locals and tourists alike, with the nightscape of the lake lighted with the lanterns and the information on the splendid culture of Baekje.
