I was given the honor of being elected as the new president of ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, the world’s largest, leading international cooperative network in the climate and environmental sector, with a membership of over 1,200 cities and local governments from 87 nations.
Thanks to the help of Seoul citizens, Seoul’s environmental policies have been recognized by the international community, which helped me become the president of the ICLEI.
Now, I would like to share this honor with all the citizens of Seoul.
And Seoul’s standards will now be adopted by the rest of the world.
For the next three years (2015-2018), I will preside over the ICLEI Board of Directors meetings and Global Executive Committee meetings as the president of the ICLEI, and will attend high-level international events in major intergovernmental conferences, such as the UN General Assembly and UNFCCC’s COP. As such, I will help coordinate environmental policies and lead Seoul’s urban diplomacy, telling the world about Seoul’s environmental policies.
As the president of the ICLEI, I will share with the world the achievements of the ICLEI World Congress, which began in Seoul today, at UNFCCC’s COP in Paris in December, when the New Climate Regime (Post-2020) is expected to be launched.
As I mentioned in my inaugural speech, I will:
▴ strengthen sharing, cooperation, and connection among the world’s cities and local governments;
▴ present the greenhouse gas reduction goals and specific action plans of various cities to the international community; and
▴ share Seoul’s brand image and expertise with sustainable development.
