Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Park (DDP), designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, has its face unveiled. DDP is the first, largest building in the world that used three-dimensional digital construction administration services to ensure design and construction quality.
On January 10, Seoul Design Foundation offered a peak into the internal and external view of the building. Official opening preparation is under way with March 21st as a due date. Seoul Design Foundation official said that the foundation aims to run DDP with citizens as a mecca for design and creative industry of Seoul.
DDP is expected to serve as a venue where global design trend and design innovation are introduced and where the city’s past, present and the future are interconnected.
Under the slogan, ‘Design with People’, DDP will promote new ideas, talents from diverse background, and better quality of life. It strives to be a platform where the creative industry thrives, future talents are educated, and open-working space is provided. It will run for 24/7, with aims to make 60 sites landmarks and operate with complete financial independence.
The 85,000-square-meter structure with 62,692m2 plottage, has three underground floors and four floors. It consists of five spaces (Exhibition and Convention Halls, Information center, Training Center, Design Experience Hall, and Dongdaemun History & Culture Park) and 15 related facilities.
Total KRW 484 billion, consist of 421.2 billion won for construction and 62.8 billion won for operation preparation, was invested in the building. On Nov, 30th, 2013, construction of the building was completed and its charming interior and exterior will be opened to the public soon.
DDP was designed by Zaha Hadid, the first female architecture who won the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004. The structure with grandiose and futuristic design is also the world’s largest three dimensional building that has free-flowing curves on the exterior.
At her design proposal for DDP, Zaha Hadid laid out the concept of ‘Metonymic Landscape’. Her vision for DDP was to create a new landscape for Dongdaemun by metonymically integrating the various historical, cultural, urban, societal, and economic features of the area. To this end, Zaha Hadid took a note of the dynamic rhythm of Dongdaemun, of which landscape constantly changes from early dawn to dusk.
With her signature design that instills flow into the structure with curved and tilted walls and ceilings, she created a space where natural and artificial objects are seamlessly connected. Based on the concept, DDP has come to add the new landscape on the historic Dongdaemun site.
DDP plans to create convention and exhibition contents that meet two conditions, ‘Must-be’ and “Must-do’ ; One ‘Must-be’- the contents must be the ones that look to Dongdaemun, Seoul, Asia and the world. The other ‘Must-do; the contents must do the service as a platform to create and converge brand and trend for shared prosperity.
On last November, the DDP and the Gansong Art and Culture Foundation signed an agreement to host co-exhibitions for the next three years. As for DDP opening exhibition, ‘Korea Design Origin Exhibition’ will be held with about 80 national treasures including the Explanation Script for Hunminjeonge, the Joseon dynasty-era document explaining the meaning of Hangeul.
In 2014, various exhibitions in collaboration with other creative power houses are scheduled to be held at DDP, including ‘Sports and Design Exhibition’, ‘Exhibition for Zaha Hadid Works’ ‘Enzo Mari: Art of Design Exhibition’ and ‘Hochschule Fur Gestaltung Exhibition’.
Through the exhibitions, DDP will set out to achieve its goal to become a hub for creative resources where Korean design values are discovered, its design territory is expanded and urban issues are highlighted.
On March 21, the opening day of DDP, the 28th Seoul Fashion Week, which is recognized as the global fashion business event in Asia, will be held in DDP. For the last 14 years, the Seoul Fashion Week has offered a window for not just Korean young designers but also rising Asian designers to go global, and cemented its position as a predominant fashion event that represents Seoul.
