Every Saturday, Nowon-gu holds a Culture Street Art Festival. Family members in casual clothes head to the concert place, where the audience gives a big hand to the performers.
This year marks the 7th year of the street festival featuring diverse genres, held in the northeastern part of Seoul. Artists are glad that many people gather to watch their performances. For their part, people are also happy that they can enjoy diverse genres of art performances in their neighborhood.
The structure indicating the entrance to Nowon Culture Street looks similar to Triumphal Arch in Paris. A statue of an accordionist standing in front of the structure greets people with a broad smile. The statue is flanked by other statues of B-Boys and a clown with a funny facial expression. Visitors are also delighted by the sight of another statue of a juggler with a heavily painted face on a monocycle. The bronze structure next to it, named PLAY, is another landmark of Nowon Culture Street, put on a three-tiered granite stone. The place located between the entrance to the street and Line 4 Nowon Station is a favorite photo zone among visitors.
The Nowon Culture Street Art Festival serves as an opportunity for the locals and those from outside of Nowon-gu to mingle.
The Nowon-Gu encourages local residents, including students, to take part in neighborhood music concerts held in ten nearby places including Danggogae Neighborhood Park. Students are crazy about concerts featuring live rock music, folk songs, and break dance held at their own schools.
Artists also give performances by paying visits to areas where multi-cultural families live together and social welfare facilities for the disabled and senior citizens.
