    Costa Rica President Carlos Alvarado has been bestowed honorary Seoul citizenship.

    President Carlos Alvarado who visited Korea from Sun, Nov. 21 to Wed, Nov. 24 was bestowed honorary Seoul citizenship by Mayor Oh Se-hoon during his visit to Seoul City Hall at 3 PM on Mon, Nov. 22.

    This is his first trip to Korea since taking office in May 2018, and the first in five years since former President Luis Guillermo Solís visited Seoul City Hall in 2016. President Carlos Alvarado, as an important foreign guest to Seoul, will be given a certificate of honorary citizenship based on the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s (SMG) protocol to greeting foreign guests.

    The SMG certificate of honorary Seoul citizenship is presented to international recipients who have resided in Seoul for three consecutive years or more, for five cumulative years or more, or who is visiting as an important foreign guest.

    President Carlos Alvarado, who was 38 years old at the time of his presidential inauguration, became the youngest serving Costa Rican President, and he was also previously Minister of Labor and Social Security. He has launched a plan to fully decarbonize the country while in office, and as an exemplary nation protecting the environment in Central America, it remains fully committed to joining the international community’s fight against climate change.

    Subsequent to the awarding ceremony for honorary citizenship, Mayor Oh and President Alvarado continued their talk, discussing ways to strengthen economic cooperation in the post-pandemic era with Costa Rica, which became the 38th member of the OECD this year, and to promote exchanges in the environment and digital fields.

    Meanwhile, President Alvarado will be the 36th head of state to be handed a certificate of honorary citizenship of Seoul, which is awarded to major foreign guests. A total of five people from Costa Rica have been bestowed with honorary Seoul citizenship, and President Carlos Alvarado will be the sixth to receive the honor.
