Colombian President Iván Duque Márquez has been bestowed honorary Seoul citizenship.

President Iván Duque Márquez who visited Korea from Tue, Aug. 24 to Thu, Aug. 26 was bestowed honorary Seoul citizenship by Mayor Oh Se-hoon during his visit to Seoul City Hall at 2:30 PM on Thu, Aug. 26.

It has been ten years since the last visit by a president of Colombia since President Juan Manuel Santos visited in September 2011, and President Márquez was presented with the certificate of honorary Seoul citizenship in accordance with the criteria of the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) for the reception of foreign guests. The SMG certificate of honorary Seoul citizenship is presented to international recipients who have resided in Seoul for three consecutive years, for more than five cumulative years, or who is visiting as an important foreign guest.

President Márquez became the youngest president of Colombia at the age of forty-two upon election in 2018, and he presented an economic vision on strategies for Colombia’s new generation and economic development based on creative projects in his book Orange Economy (2013) during his position at Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and even appraised South Korea as a powerful nation in terms of advanced technology and cultural content.

Following the presentation ceremony, Mayor Oh and President Márquez held a private discussion on matters regarding the development of enterprises in the era of Industry 4.0, infrastructure for enterprise support, and revitalization of start-ups.

As a head of state recipient, President Márquez is the thirty-fifth to be bestowed honorary Seoul citizenship as an important foreign guest. Up until now, nine important individuals who visited Seoul from Colombia were bestowed with honorary Seoul citizenship, making President Marquez the tenth recipient.

Colombia is a significant ally of Korea and the only Latin American country to dispatch more than five thousand combat soldiers to Korea on the Almirante Padilla-class frigate during the Korean War. Next year marks the 40th anniversary of Seoul and Bogotá’s sister city relations, making this bestowal even more special. The SMG expects to establish more exchanges with main cities in Colombia, such as sister cities Bogotá and Medellín, to form opportunities for the global expansion of enterprises and the revitalization of economic exchanges.
