Housewarming of the 1st Public Housing Cooperative “Ieumchae”
Date November 23rd, 2014 | Venue 1st Public Housing Cooperative “Ieumchae”
It is a great pleasure to be here today. I am the mayor of Seoul, Park Won Soon. Thank you for inviting me to your housewarming at a time when you must be very busy moving to and organizing your new place.
The public housing cooperative project was part of the plan to supply the 80 thousand rental residences I promised to Seoul citizens during my campaign for a fifth term as mayor. I am so happy to see this come to fruition.
As some of you might know, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is proceeding with the Ieumchae Cooperative for Childcare, the Mallidong Artists Cooperative in Jung-gu, and the Youth Cooperative in Hongeun-dong, Seodaemun-gu, followed by a cooperative public housing for young people working for the sewing industry in urban regeneration areas. The Ieumchae housing here in Gayang-dong, in other words, is only the beginning.
I have heard of many difficulties in the process; for example, around a half of the cooperative members left due to obstructing structures underground and complaints about construction in the neighborhood, and I understand additional members had to be recruited. It is a great relief that you are moving in two years after the resident recruitment in October 2012. Congratulations.
In Ieumchae, a community is formed around mutual childcare. I hope you take care of our precious children, and allow them to be even more precious and happy with good neighbors. You are the very first public housing cooperative in Korean history. Please show us you are living happy lives, bringing the fresh breeze of a new culture to housing communities in Korea. Once again, congratulations and thank you very much.
