COME & VISIT
Event & Activities
The annual festival held at Namsangol Hanok Village is in celebration of the major Korean holiday known as “Dano”, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Our ancestors believed this to be the day when the yang energy (the active, masculine cosmic principle in Chinese dualistic philosophy) was at its fullest. The temperature begins to rise around the time of Dano as summer kicks in just about this time. It was also the day where ancestral ceremonies were carried out in the hope for a prosperous harvest (such ceremonies was also carried out at royal palaces). On Dano day, our ancestors ate rice cakes, called “surichi tteok”, which were made with various herbs.
There are many events organized to mark this day, from neighborhood ssireum (Korean=style wrestling) competitions to a chance to rinse your hair with water in which the stems of the flag iris flower have been boiled. During the Namsangol Dano Festival, visitors can experience a variety of traditional Korean sports, entertainment and cultural events for free.
