2018 Seoullo Summer Festival – Seoullo go

The City of Seoul held the ‘2018 Seoullo Summer Festival – Seoullo go’ for five days from August 22 to 26 at Malli-dong Square and offered a variety of programs to help citizens beat the summer heat. About 20 circular pools with diameters of 1-2m were installed under the theme of ‘a library’ where children can read waterproof books and play with water guns and other water toys. Additionally, mission games were made available throughout Seoullo 7017 while film screening, performances, and experiential programs were offered for all family members to enjoy.

Bongwonsa Temple

Bongwonsa Temple was built in the year 889 as a thousand-year-old temple located at Ansan Mountain in Bongwon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. In the precincts of the temple is the pagoda tree of 500 years that has been designated a Seoul’s protected tree and behind the temple stands the Gwaneumbawi Rock. A representative feature of Bongwonsa Temple is the lotus. The lotuses have dwelled around the temple for long periods to create a unique atmosphere. The ‘Seoul Lotus Flower Cultural Festival’ is held every summer at Bongwonsa Temple for residents to enjoy.

SOS – Summer of Seoul Festival

Since 2008, the Seoul City has organized this summer festival with the hope of “offering an entertaining day to citizens who wish to escape their daily routines and the scorching heat.” This year, the “SOS Festival 2018” was held on August 10th and 11th in the three main plazas of the city: Seoul Plaza, Cheonggye Plaza and Gwanghwamun Square. While Seoul Plaza organized “Cinemusic Vacation” and a film festival on the topic of movies and soundtracks, a graphic competition, and Hip Hop and B-boy performances were organized at Cheonggye Plaza. Finally, visitors were given the opportunity to enjoy diverse programs on the theme “Vacation in the city” at Gwanghwamun Square. Meanwhile, lectures on artistic movies and human sciences were held in six of Seoul’s main cultural institutions, including Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul Museum of History, Seoul Citizens Hall, Seoul Metropolitan Library, and the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History under the theme “Art Vacation.”

Hangang Summer Festival

The Hangang Summer Festival has taken its spot as the representative summer festival in Seoul ever since 2013, as a platform-type cultural city festival formed by the convergence of citizens and artists, private enterprises, and the local government. Taking place during July and August throughout all of the Hangang River and all the Hangang River parks, there will be over 80 programs to enjoy, including water fun, movies, performances, circuses, Summer Green School, boating, biking, food streets, and more. Besides the 2018 Hangang Summer Festival’s main programs including the Hangang Paper Boat Competition, Hangang Under the Bridge Film Festival, Hangang Night Walk 42K, Hangang Water Fight Festival, Under the Bridge Secondhand Book Festival, and Hangang Fire Dancing Festival, there will also be various art programs prepared under the theme ‘Mid-Summer’s River Art Playground,’ such as the Hangang Starlight Small Theater, Hangang Moonlight Circus, and the Yeonhui Madang.

Yanghwa Hangang Park

From the Yeouido Saetgang estuary to the center of Gayangdaegyo Bridge’s southern part in Gangseo-gu, this park occupies an area of 361,628㎡ and is 5.9㎞ long. There is a bicycle path that goes from the Saetgang estuary all the way to Gayangdaegyo Bridge, made up of a little road about 500m long under Seonyugyo Bridge, and the Yanghwa Water Playground. They hold ‘Hangang Ferryboat Festival’ at Yanghwa Hangang Park’s upstream Seonyudo pedestrian bridge for citizens and tourists alike who come seeking out the Hangang River. Ride the old fashioned way of crossing the river in the ferryboat while admiring the landscape of the Hangang River. It is available for free every year in July and August during the Hangang Summer Festival.

Haebangchon Sinheung Market

The alleyway market located in Haebangchon Ogeori, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, was opened in 1969. With butcher shops, side dish stores, clothes alteration shops, etc. making up the more than 40 small scale stores, the area is gathering young peoples’ attention with unique shops including a restaurant with only one table, a café with rooftop access, workshops, pubs, bookstores run by celebrities, and more. Haebangchon Sinheung Market flourished during 1970s and 1980s due to the active knit industry, but after that was just barely holding on due to the decline of area industries and facility deterioration. Now, the city of Seoul has plans to open a new ‘Haebang Art Market,’ featuring cultural and artistic life, in December, 2018 through the Sinheung Market environment improvement plan.

Baek In-je House

The Baek In-je House, located in Gahoe-dong of Bukchon Hanok Village, is a hanok of modern times that has been perfectly preserved. This house that overlooks the whole of Bukchon Hanok Village consists of a spacious Anchae and wide gardens with the Sarangchae at its center. It also features a small Byeoldangchae on the most elevated part of its land. This Seoul Folk Cultural Heritage No. 22 represents Bukchon Hanok Village in terms of architectural scale and historical value: it maintains the beauty of the traditional hanok while also reflecting the modern trends of its era. The “Baek In-je House Night Operation” is a special summer event organized every July and August since 2017 during which visitors can enjoy the night views of the hanok. During this time, visitors can enjoy Baek In-je House’s enchanting atmosphere while walking around the buildings freely, without a set course.

“2018 FIFA World Cup Russia” Street Cheering Team for Foreigners at Seoul Plaza

On the occasion of the international festival that is the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Seoul City organized a global street cheering event especially for foreign tourists, foreign students, multicultural families, and other foreigners staying in Seoul. This was organized in an effort to offer them an opportunity to experience Korea’s passionate and united cheering culture, and widely promote the image of Korea’s mature sense of citizenship.

During the preliminary round’s “Korea vs. Mexico” match on June 23 (Sat.) – 24 (Sun.), heated cheering featuring a group of approximately 500 foreigners took place at the large screen that was installed at Seoul Plaza for the occasion. Other various events were also organized such as the “2018 KPOP Cover Dance Festival.”

Seoul Bike Fest

The Seoul Bike Fest has operated as an annual, resident-driven bicycle parade festival since 2009, in order to promote the popularization of bicycle use, a primary form of green transportation, as an actual means of transport. The festival is comprised of a course connecting the main attractions of the city that are typically restricted from bicycle use, including the Gangbyeonbuk-ro that stretches before seven main bridges of the Hangang River, while being surprisingly popular among local residents and bicycle club members. The 10th Seoul Bike Fest, set to commence on June 17, 2018, will embark from Gwanghwamun Plaza for a 21km trek that brings participants passing through Seoul Station, Yongsan and Gangbyeonbuk-ro before arriving at World Cup Stadium. The festival typically welcomes as many as 5,000 bicycle enthusiasts a year, ranging from beginner and intermediate to advanced, and is carried out in a casual manner without the need for competition. Various programs and events are in store at the final destination, World Cup Stadium, including b-boy dance and special guest performances and more.

Donuimun Museum Village

Donuimun Museum Village is a historic culture village created by remodeling 40 various buildings ranging from hanok of Joseon Dynasty to architectural structures of the 1980s. After its first introduction as an exhibit of Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in September 2017, it officially opened its door to the public on April 10, 2018. Centered around architects, artists, and creators, it is being operated as a living culture space where visitors can experience performances, art, and education. Hanok is currently also open to foreigners.

Gilsangsa Temple

The Gilsangsa has preserved its temple atmosphere since 1997 where the Daewongak, a top-three exclusive restaurant that was in operation from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, once stood and was officially registered in the Seoul Future Heritage in 2013. It holds special charity concerts, featuring the traditional Bongchuk Ceremony together with the impaired, underprivileged children and others in need, during the month of May and The temple is located in downtown Seoul, offering easy access to residents and foreign guests. Jeong-Dong Culture Night

Taking place in Seoul’s Jeong-dong district, the heart of Korea’s modern cultural heritage, this festival is a perfect occasion to enjoy Korea’s history, culture, and night life. Starting in May 2015, this festival is held every spring and fall. The Jeong-Dong Culture Night offers visitors a very unique cultural experience with modern culture facilities open until late in the evening, and various performances and attractions prepared all around the area.
The 7th Jeong-Dong Culture Night was held from May 11th to 12th around the theme “A Walk Through Jeong-dong, Embracing the World.” During this period 38 historic-cultural attractions were open until 11pm, such as the likes of Deoksugung Palace, Seoul Museum of Art, Jeongdong Theater, the Embassy of the United States to Korea, Seoul Museum of History, and Appenzeller/Noble Memorial Museum, with various entertainment programs including modern costume parades, Jeong-dong walking tours, a Deoksugung Stone Wall Path experience, street performances, food stalls, and an art market.
