    I · SEOUL · U 2019, October No.1802019 Seoul Kimchi Festival Since the early days, kimjang (kimchi-making for the winter season) has been an important 
event unique to Korean people to prepare for winter. As everyone must help each other 
make large quantities of kimchi just in a short amount time, kimjang brings families and 
neighbors closer together. The kimjang culture has been handed down from generation 
to generation in every region and was designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of 
Humanity by UNESCO in 2013.
The 2019 Seoul Kimchi Festival will take place for three days starting on November 1 in 
Seoul Plaza and around Mugyo-ro, where visitors can watch, feel, and taste everything 
related to Korean kimjang culture. Seoul Kimchi Festival, a representative global sharing 
festival of Seoul, is the venue where more than 5,000 citizens gather to make kimchi and 
share their kimchi with others. This year, a total of 50 tons of kimchi will be made to be 
delivered to over 20,000 underprivileged households. The festival will offer colorful programs 
targeting Korean and foreign visitors alike. Those programs include Family Kimjanggan, 
where families gather to make kimchi using kimchi masters’ secret recipes, Kimchi-making 
for Foreigners that will be operated in English, and Children’s Kimchi Class.
On October 30, the 4th Seoul Brand Forum will open for the discussion about the global 
leap of the city of Seoul and the city’s brand while celebrating the 4th anniversary of the birth
